ROCKY TO THE RESCUE!It was just another weekend walk in the park. Rocky and I were strolling along a wonderful greenbelt area in Farmers Branch complete with a jogging trail, playground equipment for the kids and (Rocky’s favorite part) a great creek that is home to numerous varieties of ducks. Rocky especially enjoys these walks because he wears his long leash and doesn’t have to stick to the “heel” position. We had just passed a mother and her two small children and were headed back down to the edge of the creek. No walk is complete until Rocky has fallen in the creek at least once trying to catch a duck and he was still dry. From the direction the mother and kids had gone I heard a child yell and looked up to see a dog running after him. We stopped and then I saw the mother trying to chase the dog off by shouting, “Get out of here!” The kids had started crying and the mother was close to hysterics. All of this happened very quickly and Rocky and I only paused a few seconds before we started running toward the scene. By the time we got there a man had stopped his car and was trying to help but the loose dog kept running at the kids. Rocky immediately ran up to the dog and blocked it from making another pass. The dog was only about half Rocky’s size and seemed to realize this game was over. I was able to get hold of the dog’s collar and find her tags. As it turned out, the dog was a small Australian Shepard mix named Nash who was just trying to play. She licked my face as I held her still enough to read the phone numbers on her collar. Rocky stood guard and made it very clear he was the top dog in this particular situation. The man who had stopped to help called Nash’s numbers and left messages. A second man had stopped and suggested calling Animal Control. I knew that wasn’t going to happen if Rocky and I had any say about it and decided to just take Nash home with us until her owner could claim her. The cell phone man gave me a small leash he had in his car, I hooked Nash up and walked both dogs back to my Rav 4. Nash was a little nervous about being boosted in the back but by the time we got home she was poking her head up to look out the window and exchanging nose touches with Rocky. This rescue had a happy ending. Rocky and Nash had a great time playing in our backyard until Nash’s owner came to get her. Rocky had just acted in typical doggie fashion when we charged to the rescue but I wouldn’t have been so quick to wade into the middle if he hadn’t been with me. Ever since adopting Rocky I’ve had a feeling that he was going to do something either heroic or that will make a big difference in someone’s life. His first rescue was just a warm up. |
