Hwy 1

From Stinson Beach to Point Reyes Station, Marin County. Stunning scenery, some good straights and excellent twisty sections around Bolinas Lagoon. That's a great one and it continues to get better from there through Mendocino County.  All the way up to Astoria Oregon for that matter!

I-8 East

Take I-8 East from San Diego to 125 to 94 East. 94 is a 2 lane with nice twisties. A well-maintained road out through the scrub land. 30-50 mph.  Take S1 north at Campo (twisties) and on to Julian. Take 79 West down the mountain and then 76 West to Temecula/Fallbrook and on to I-15.  You can then either run I-15 South or continue west on 78 to the coast and take I-5 or the Pacific Coast Highway south back to San Diego. Northwest of Julian is Palomar Mountain Road. It has major twisties and decreasing radius turns up the mountain. Great run-- a crotch rocket hangout. About 200 miles total, NOTE: 94 is a blast to run in low traffic situations but during rush hour traffic really picks up.

Hwy 9

Hwy 9 is beautifully paved + full of nice turns. Best area is from Saratoga to Boulder Creek. Skyline runs into it at top of the hill. When dry its a riders heaven - when it rains the crap from the hills washes onto the road.

This is an awesome ride with a six-thousand foot elevation change! Lots of twisties and plenty of decent speed. But because it is a travel destination and one of the better passes over the Sierra's there is a lot of traffic. A great deal of it is larger slower traffic. Still a beautiful ride on Sunday morning!

Hopland Grade.

Sonoma County to Lake County After you leave Hwy 101, you wind up the hill past two large vineyards and after about 5 miles you are at the bottom of the hill. Most people drive the 10 or 11 miles at 20 to 35 mph. From 500' elevation to 2400' in 6 miles at 35 to 50 mph you learn how good your car's cooling system is functioning and you manage to wear a lot of rubber off the shoulder of the car's tires. Going over the top and down into Lake County is another 5 miles of even tighter twisty roads dropping 1100'. Precision driving is needed as the road is less than 16' wide for both lanes on some of the tighter sections. One side of the road is a bank straight up, the other straight down. One way you test your power, the other your brakes. I've often thought it would be a great route for a hill climb type race. In the last decade I could often get over the grade and meet only a car or two. With Petaluma's Telecom Valley and the booming employment and housing market, people are moving to Lake County and enduring the 1 to 2 hour commute to work and now meeting 10 to 20 cars on the road is the norm. Paradise isn't quite yet lost.

Grizzley Peak

In Oakland is just a spectacular road; great curves, awesome view of the bay, and-if you're bold-you can get up to about 70 on the fastest straight, not too mention low traffic at night. But be sure to check your brakes, Go north from Oakland. Several corners are posted 15mph and they MEAN 15mph (well 20 maybe).

Briceland Rd./Shelter Cove Rd

In the Lost Coast area of California. On CA 101, exit Redwood Rd towards Redway.  Make a left past a "Shop Smart" supermarket onto Briceland Rd. This turns into Shelter Cove Rd.  The section from Redway to Whitethorn has mostly 40-55mph curves.  From Whitethorn to Shelter Cove it's very steep and a lot of curves are 15mph.  Watch out because they post some curve speed limits but not others, so don't assume you can just blast through the next curve at 55 if they don't post it. The scenery is great too with deep gorges filled with evergreen forests and occasional views of the Pacific, which looks very blue here, near the end.

Mt Palomar (south grade)

One lane roads many 180+ degree hairpins Frequent law enforcement via air - looking for bikes that pass on double yellow. Mothers (eatery at top) is a sport bike Mecca

Mesa Grande Rd

Updated thanks to Kathlene!

According to one rider the Shortcut between 79N & 76W on the North part of road (the 76 end) is the twistiest piece of pavement they had ever seen. Narrow one lane in each direction with many blind turns.  79 runs from the Riverside county line, through Santa Ysabel, julian and then though Cuycamaca state park to rt I-8  Hwy 67 starts at I-8 and ends at 10th street in Ramona, where it picks up/changes to Hwy 78, It off the 78 west of Santa Ysabel and rt 76, near the biker hang out "The Hideout" I believe it is off of the "Center" or "East Loop" not actually 76, but the loops are off of 76.

Ortega Highway 74

From San Juan Capistrano to Lake Elsinore in So Orange Co. in So.Cal. Great mix of tight twisties and great scenery. 36 miles of challenging corners + scenery the road traverses the Santa Ana mountains starting at near sea level + going up to 2800 feet. Look Out Point is a great hang out for many sport bike enthusiasts. Go on to Palomar for an all day ride in the twisties!!

Calaveras Road

Runs from E end of Niles Canyon near Sunol - San Francisco East Bay at 680, down past the east side of Fremont to Milpitas. Runs along side of hills + has 90-180 degree bends every 50-100 yards. Decreasing radius turns also - very slow, need to set speed in corners and concentrate.
