Hwy 2

From St. Ignace to Naubinway.

26

Michigan highway 26, from Eagle River to Copper Harbor. Good asphalt, middlin' shoulders, little gravel (except in early spring). Approximately 25 miles along the Lake Superior coast. The northernmost road in Michigan passes through Eagle Harbor, a U.S. Harbor of Refuge & Coast Guard station, as it winds along the rocky Lake Superior coast. Follows the coast VERY closely, so some of the curves can be wicked.
This is mining country, and the roads up here are noted for high iron and copper ore content-- hence, pink pavement!
Great whitefish dinners abound in Eagle River and Copper Harbor. Copper Harbor also holds historic Fort Wilkins. The Eagle River Falls, near the western end of this road, are well worth a rest-stop.

Hwy 37

From Traverse City to Old Mission Point.

Hwy 41

From Hancock to Copper Harbor

Hwy 119

From Harbor Springs to Cross Village.

119

Michigan highway 119, from Cross Village to Harbor Springs. Good asphalt, narrow shoulders, very little gravel (although leaves can be a problem in fall). Approximately 20 miles along the Lake Michigan coast, 20 miles southwest of Macinaw City. Winds through forestland and across the Lake Michigan Palisades with a commanding view of the lakeshore. Notable for "The Devil's Elbow", a WICKED double-switchback about halfway through the run.

Dexter Trail

From Mason to Michigan Highway 52, 2 miles north of Stockbridge. Fair-to-good asphalt, wide shoulders, seasonal gravel. Approximately 20 miles through forest & farmland. You wouldn't think that a road through rural Michigan would wind around this much, but it follows some OLD property lines & land contours. Borders the Dansville State Game Area, so watch out for deer!   Pick it up just east of Mason off Michigan Highway 36, or two miles north of Stockbridge off Michigan Highway 52.

Lake Shore Drive

From Ludington to Pentwater. Good asphalt, wide shoulders in the northern end, moderate gravel & sand (seasonal). Approx. 15 miles along the Lake Michigan & Bass Lake coasts. Hard to find, but well worth the search! Follows the coast with a commanding view of the lakeshore along the northern (Ludington) end, winds (sharply!) through forest, marsh, and cottages near Bass Lake.
Beware of sand blown in from the Lake Michigan dunes along the southern (Bass Lake) end. Beware of tourists around Bass Lake; the cottages are VERY congested, but the trafic is usually light. Road shoulders are very narrow, if not totally missing, near Bass Lake.
